Wienerschnitzel has joined the list of fast food chains offering meat-free protein.
The Newport Beach-based chain has rolled out a trio of plant-based hot dogs for a limited time at participating locations.
They are the Backyard Veggie Dog, served with American cheese, tomato, pickle spear, ketchup and mustard; the Chicago Veggie Dog, made with mustard, pickle spear, tomato, onion, relish, and peppers; and the Barbeque Veggie Dog with barbecue sauce, pickle spear and chopped onions.
The hot dog is made with pea protein that is naturally smoked and seasoned with the same spices as beef hot dogs, according to a news release from the company.
Plant-based meats have been growing in popularity for several years now and are included in the National Restaurant Association’s list of hot trends for 2022.
The offer comes at the time of year when many restaurant chains promote healthy menu items aimed at customers with dietary New Year’s resolutions.
On Monday, Chipotle Mexican Grill launched plant-based chorizo, also made with pea protein.
Veggie dogs cost $4.49, but a coupon for $1 off is available at the Wienerschnitzel website.
