METRO:
The inclement weather might not have been great for boating, but it has fired up the pink snapper throughout the metropolitan area. They have been taken across a range of depths, with 15-20m worth a try both south and north of Rottnest Island.
They have also been caught in Cockburn Sound, along with the odd mulloway, as well as along the Three-Mile Reef and Five-Fathom Bank. Shore fishers have been picking pinkies up as well, although generally not in big numbers. Rather, there have been a few caught at different times at the moles and from other popular platforms.
Dhufish are also continuing to fish well all along the coast. Smallish southern bluefin tuna, around 2-4kg, are being taken out from West End.
Good samson fish have been taken in 30-40m north of Rottnest.
Skippy are starting to show up offshore in big numbers and has been caught along with smallish pink snapper.
Windmills and Rottnest have been worth a try for skippy and big King George whiting, with tailor at Mewstones.
Inshore fishers from Fremantle north have picked up squid, sand whiting, skippy and herring.
Cockburn Sound has produced herring, squid and skippy.
Shore fishers at Rottnest have been picking up skippy and the odd tailor, along with loads of herring.
At the moles there have been herring and the odd salmon, as well as skippy and small snapper, with the odd mulloway showing up in the harbour. Prawns are still worth chasing in the lower reaches, but their size has dropped a little, with mulloway also being caught, often soapies. Black bream are best around structures in the lower reaches, or in the Canning River. Black bream to 37cm have been coming from Moore River.
Challenger Beach has been producing tailor, with the same species and a few mulloway along the north metropolitan beaches.
Point Peron has produced chopper tailor and herring.
The beaches between Port Kennedy and Mandurah have been producing some mulloway, and they have also been taken at White Hills.
The stretch from San Remo to Madora has been good. Dhufish have been taken out from the Dawesville Cut, with good pinkies around the storm fronts. SBTs to 4kg are still in good numbers in 28-30m off Mandurah.
The Cut has been fishing really well for herring, with a few squid at the western end on an incoming tide. Black bream are on the snags in the lower Murray River, with a few still in the town canals.
ALBANY:
The annual squid competition was held last weekend and saw some great results, with 70 anglers taking part.
The weather was average, as it was cold and wet for the most part of the comp. Shore angler Steven Plant managed to catch the biggest squid at an impressive 1.89kg.
Plenty of squid were weighed in, with the best bag of 10 coming in at 7.81kg. All the boats that entered caught full bags in King George Sound. The weather has largely made offshore fishing impossible in recent weeks, but the Sound has been producing squid and plenty of sand whiting.
King George whiting are being taken, but have been unusually elusive at times. Several small local estuaries have opened to the ocean and this has meant some great bream fishing, with herring and juvenile salmon also being caught.
There should also be some bigger salmon exploring them. Professional fishers in the Wilson Inlet have netted pink snapper to 7kg as the water level in there has risen significantly. Salmon fishing has been best around Bremer Bay, with Fosters and Reef beaches always worth a try. At Cheynes there have been skippy and herring along the beach, with cobbler in front of the township. Herring have also been taken along the rocks.
AUGUSTA:
The bream competition last weekend saw good catches, with the fish generally sitting in deeper water to the amount of fresh water coming down the Blackwood River.
Most of the entrants caught good fish. Gun bream angler Joseph Gardner took the honours with a full bag of 10 fish over two days for 6.6kg. He also caught the biggest fish, at 1.17kg, on the second day. Alex Greisdorf was second with 6.47kg and Greg Cooper came third with 6.42kg.
CARNARVON:
Locals say that the fishing around town is as good as it has ever been offshore. Pink snapper are being found everywhere in a range of sizes.
The islands have been producing well for mixed species for bottom fishers, with heaps of spangled emperor, rankin cod, red emperor, pinkies and a few baldchin groper all reported.
There are also heaps of Spanish mackerel and tuna around, including lots of longtails and a few yellowfin.
Around the town, the beaches are producing tailor and mulloway for shore anglers. Blue swimmer crabs have also moved into the inshore waters in big numbers.
The Lady Joyce wreck has been offering black and pink snapper. The Fascine is fishing well for plenty of tailor, as well as black snapper, cod and whiting on the sandbars. And Bush Bay has been producing squid and whiting. At Quobba Station there has been some excellent fishing for Spaniards and a few cobia, with both lure casters and ballooners all getting into the action. Bait fishing has produced spangled emperor and pink snapper.
