Deontay Wilder believes Anthony Joshua has a ‘big stamina problem’ but is confident fans will see a ‘different’ fighter if he can correct it.
AJ was beaten by Oleksandr Usyk for a second time on August 20 via a points decision. Despite a much-improved performance, the bout slipped away from the Watford powerhouse in the championship rounds as Usyk finished strong down the home straight.
Much was made of Joshua’s perceived hesitancy in the first fight and even the second – and in Wilder’s opinion, this is entirely down to his gas tank. The American claims that Joshua is ‘fearful of running out of gas’, which limits his strengths.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Usyk vs Joshua, he said: “I just think Joshua was very cautious in what he did as far as exchanging punches [with Usyk]. I always forever said it, as I see it, he has a big stamina problem.
On October 15 he is back in the ring for the first time since sustaining those losses, as he takes on Robert Helenius in a WBC eliminator bout at the Barclays Centre in New York City.
When asked whether Joshua can make the adjustments required to claw himself back to the top, Wilder replied: “Where there’s a will there’s a way. When you go back in the gym and get yourself together and think about all the things, then it’s time to come back and revive yourself and do the things that you’ve got to do.
“When people think people have failed in certain things I don’t think just because something didn’t go your way, I don’t consider it as failure. Failure is only someone that has given up in life and don’t want to succeed to make themselves great. I feel everyone has greatness in them. It’s not over for him unless he says it is.”
