The nominations for the 2022 Academy Awards are expected to be announced in a few days on February 8, and anticipation is, as always, incredibly high. Looking at the Best Original Song category, it seems like the ninety-fourth Oscars will be chock full of pop stars vying for one of the most coveted prizes in the entertainment industry, which isn’t always the case. Two of the biggest artists in the business who are definitely in the running know each other very, very well, and they might end up competing against one another very soon.
Tracks by both Jay-Z and Beyoncé made the cut for the annual shortlist, which narrows down all submissions to just a few that voters can select from. The husband-and-wife duo didn’t work together on a project this year, but the two musicians have tunes in contention for a spot in the Best Original Song vertical, and there’s a real chance that they might both end up being included.
Beyoncé has been touted by many who closely follow the Oscars as a likely nominee, as her single “Be Alive” from the film King Richard has been a frontrunner for a spot in the Best Original Song field since it was released months ago. The singer has been attempting to earn a nod for many years, and she is long overdue for a chance to collect some gold.
Jay-Z is eligible with his track “Guns Go Bang,” which is featured in the movie The Harder They Fall. The tune also credits fellow rapper Kid Cudi and the film’s producer, director and writer Jeymes Samuel, who will likewise be nominated should Mr. Beyoncé land an Oscar nod.
Neither Bey nor Jay have been nominated for an Academy Award before, but they have contributed a number of tracks to films in the past. The superstars both received acclaim for their works this past year, and Oscar voters may select one, or both of them for one of the five spaces in the Best Original Song field, which has become a go-to for musicians who want to complete their EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony—the four major awards in the entertainment industry).
While both Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s tunes are among the few in the running for a Best Original Song Oscar nomination (there are only 15 still in the competition), nothing is certain when it comes to the Academy Awards. A number of other massive musical stars, such as Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Brian Wilson and U2, are also hoping to hear their names called. If the married couple does manage to snag two nods, they will then have to wish each other luck as they compete against each other for the trophy.
