The Handmaid’s Tale star Ann Dowd has offered an update on the future of the series as fans wonder if it will return for season 6.

Last year, season 4 of the dystopian drama was released, reuniting viewers with June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) months after the show had already been renewed for a fifth season.

The latest episodes saw June finally break out of Gilead, coming face to face with her husband Luke (OT Fagbenle) for the first time in years as she continued to plot the downfall of the land that held her hostage and her captors, Fred (Joseph Fiennes) and Serena (Yvonne Strahovski).

The finale ended with a huge shock, as a pivotal character from the beginning of the series met a measly fate.

So will there be a sixth season? Ann, who plays the fearfully intimidating Aunt Lydia, has revealed it could be on the cards.

In a recent interview with RadioTimes.com, who stars in the 2021 film Mass, revealed that the writers of the show, who are ‘very smart’, ‘don’t tell actors anything’.

Nonetheless, she did let a crucial detail slip.

‘What would I say about it? No, I don’t have a clue at all about what will be happening. I do know that there’s a season five and six,’ she said, as she added that filming was due to begin at the ‘end of January’.

Despite the acclaim that The Handmaid’s Tale has continued to receive for its powerful and heartbreaking scenes, it was not recognised as some may have been expecting at the 2021 Emmys, breaking the record for the most losses ever recorded at the ceremony for one season.

The Handmaid’s Tale received 21 nominations in total across the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and the Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place a week apart.

However, it didn’t win a single accolade.

The show has earned a multitude of awards in the past, including several Emmys and Golden Globes.

Hulu has been contacted for comment.

The Handmaid’s Tale is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
