William Gallas believes Chelsea’s medical team are to blame for Reece James and Wesley Fofana’s recent injury setbacks.
James suffered a knee injury in October that saw him miss out on England’s World Cup campaign in Qatar.
The right-back returned to the starting XI for Chelsea’s first game back against Bournemouth on 27 December but was forced off injured once again after 53 minutes.
Graham Potter would later reveal James had suffered an injury to the same knee that kept him sidelined in October and November.
Chelsea have also been without summer signing Wesley Fofana for much of the season with the Frenchman also sidelined with a knee injury in October, just a month after completing his £75million move from Leicester.
Alongside James, Fofana stepped up his recovery during the World Cup break but again like his Blues teammate, picked up another knee problem in a friendly match against Brentford before the resumption of the Premier League.
With Chelsea hit by a number of injury issues this season, former Blues defender Gallas believes the problem may lie with the club’s medical staff, fearing the recent recurrences of old problems are becoming an issue.
‘Reece James is in a very difficult position at the moment,’ Gallas told Genting Casino.
‘When you have a knee problem, you come back and you are injured again, you have to be strong mentally – and I’m sure he is a strong guy.
‘James was injured and missed the World Cup. When he was finally fit again, in 15 minutes he was injured.
‘For Fofana, the same thing happened. He was injured. They bring him back on the pitch, He gets injured again. Five more players are in this predicament, so my question is: What is wrong? Maybe it’s the medical staff? They have to look at this because it’s not normal.
‘It’s important to have great medical staff. When I was at Chelsea, the medical staff were unbelievable and we hardly had any problems.
‘We had injured players, but we never had any reoccurrence of injuries as we are seeing today.’
