Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has explained why his old club might have a key ‘problem’ over midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The Blues smashed the British transfer record to bring in Argentina’s World Cup winner Fernandez to Stamford Bridge from Portuguese club Benfica in a deal worth a whopping £106.8m in the January transfer window.

But Gallas has warned that the west London club may face a dilemma when they come round to selling the 22-year-old, who is an ‘expensive gamble’ for Chelsea.

Gallas told Genting Casino: ‘Enzo Fernandez is an expensive gamble in my opinion, even if he had a great World Cup and is very young.

‘Look at how he was playing with Argentina. He played like a really experienced player.

‘He definitely has the talent and everybody can see that. But it is his first time in the Premier League.

‘Nobody knows how he’s going to adapt. Is he going to live up to the level that everyone expects him to be?

‘Sometimes we see clubs just buy players who haven’t proved themselves.

‘Nowadays in football after one season, your value can increase. From a club’s standpoint, I think a club should wait to put that price on someone just to be sure.

‘Once you’ve bought that player for over £100m, you need to win trophies with that player in the following years.

‘Once you want to sell him, you have to sell him for more than you bought him for. When that doesn’t happen, it becomes a problem.’

Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has also revealed his ‘worry’ over Chelsea’s record-breaking January move for Fernandez.

‘Chelsea’s signing of Enzo Fernandez worries me,’ ex-England boss Allardyce said on William Hill and Footy Accumulators’ podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football.

‘What if it doesn’t work? What a commitment it is for eight years because obviously, the league haven’t shut that loophole down yet.

‘It’s £107 million – it’s a huge risk for the club, and particularly for the manager [Graham Potter], who will get the blame if it doesn’t work. I don’t think Fernandez was his choice.

‘I doubt the player was his first choice, but that’s how the top works now. You are not really the manager anymore, you are just a coach, and you accept these players and try and do your best with them.’
