Jack Wilshere has revealed how he took the No.10 shirt from Robin van Persie during his time at Arsenal – and it was a lot easier than you might think.
The former Gunners midfielder – who is currently back training with his former club – wore the shirt number at the Emirates Stadium until he left in 2018.
He took it from Van Persie, who was a legend in north London before he signed for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in 2012 and helped them to a Premier League title with his goals.
There would have been plenty of suitors for the vacant No.10 jersey, which became iconic having been worn by the likes of Van Persie and legendary forward Dennis Bergkamp.
But, when asked how he managed to get the number ahead of his teammates, Wilshere explained how simple it was.
“I asked for it,” Wilshere admitted to talkSPORT.
Goldstein then asked: “Who had it before you? [Dennis] Bergkamp, was it?”
“No, it was Van Persie,” the former Gunners midfielder said.
“There were rumors. It was awkward actually because there were rumors about him leaving for United.
“I didn’t know what was happening and I didn’t know what was going on.
“But I went to see the manager and said, ‘Look, I’m not sure what’s happening with Robin and I don’t really want to know, that’s not why I’m coming here, but if he does go could I have the No.10?’
“He just said, ‘Yeah, of course’.”
