Wilt Chamberlain is one of the most intimidating and dominate players in NBA history. But, there is one player who struck fear into the big man’s heart during his professional basketball career — at least according to Julius Erving.
During a recent appearance on the Knuckleheads Podcast, Dr. J said Wes Unseld was the only player tough enough to intimidate Wilt.
“I’m going in the lane, and that damn Wes Unseld was back there helping, and Elvin (Hayes). I knew Unseld would hurt you and not even blink. He would take the courage from the other players on your team because they wouldn’t even come out and come to your rescue. Might not even come pick you up because they gonna get hit by him too. So he was the only guy Wilt was scared of in the league, and I always heard that before I got over to the league,” Erving said.
Chamberlain averaged 30.1 points and 22.9 rebounds per game over his 16-year NBA career. In head-to-head matchups against Unseld, his numbers dropped to 18.2 points and 20.6 rebounds per game, per statmuse.
Chamberlain (7-foot-1) had a significant size advantage over Unseld (6-foot-7), but the Baltimore Bullets big man clearly knew how to get to his towering rival.
