Laura says she is an air fryer convert. Over the last few weeks she has cooked everything from bread, Yorkshire pudding and chips in it, to fried eggs, jacket potato and cookies. In her words, she ‘loves it’.
As Laura wrote on SurreyLive, she has been using the fryer to save money on her household bills as the trendy energy-saving device cooks food much quicker than her “ancient gas range oven”. However, when she used her air fryer every day for a week, she encountered one slight problem.
As Laura explains: It was my brother’s birthday, and as the resident cake maker in the family, I was a bit stumped when I attempted to bake a Victoria sandwich in my new favourite kitchen device. I followed a tried and tested vanilla sponge recipe for it, but used my air fryer rather than an oven as instructed in the Cakeontherun method.
I split the silky batter into two lined 8inch cake tins, but could only fit one of the tins into my air fryer. I normally have them sitting side by side in my oven. There was no way I could even attempt to squeeze both cake tins in, so I had to cook the sponges one at a time. This meant I didn’t save any time or electricity baking my cakes in an air fryer.
While the air fryer remains my favourite cooking gadget, and works wonders for making bacon and eggs, when it came to a family-sized Vicky sponge, it wasn’t cost-effective.
