The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s upcoming season features the highest number of new commissions by women composers.

The orchestra’s 2023 program, launched on Wednesday night, features 10 out of 17 commissioned pieces by women, including Elena Kats-Chernin, who will premiere her Double Concerto for violin and cello.

Celebrated Australian composer Mary Finsterer will also become the MSO Composer in Residence, with the premiere of her work Mysterium I.

The upcoming season will see the orchestra return to a full slate of concerts across Victoria, with almost 200 scheduled events.

Among the standouts will be the London Symphony Orchestra with conductor Sir Simon Rattle, and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

“Each day that I work with the MSO I am genuinely inspired and invigorated by the passion and professionalism of the players and the organisation,” chief conductor Jaime Martin said in announcing the program.

The national children’s choir Gondwana Voices will also join the MSO as ensemble in residence for a series of performances including Brett Dean’s Vexations and Devotions in July.
