Navneet Kaur scored a brace as the Indian women’s hockey team beat Japan 3-1 to finish ninth in the FIH World Cup here today.

Navneet (30th, 45th minutes) scored two field goals, while Deep Grace Ekka (38th) converted a penalty corner in the classification match. Japan’s lone goal was scored by Yu Asai in the 20th minute.

After a frantic start, India got their first chance to take the lead but Vandana Katariya’s effort from close range was saved by Japan’s goalkeeper Eika Nakamura. The tussle for supremacy continued in the second quarter, with India wasting a couple of chances in quick succession. India were then stunned when Japan took the lead through Asai’s goal from a penalty corner.

India lifted their game and earned a number of penalty corners but couldn’t convert any. They finally drew parity when Navneet latched on to a loose ball and smashed it into the bottom corner.

India started on the front foot after the change of ends. They kept earning penalty corners, and Ekka finally converted one to give her side the lead. India kept up the pressure, with Katariya coming close and Sharmila Devi’s goal being disallowed. India put the contest to rest when Navneet scored her second.
