In fact, until Friday South Africa had never qualified for a final of ICC World Cup. Their men’s or women’s sides till date had never reached the final of an ODI World Cup or a T20 World Cup.

South Africa Women win thriller

The thrilling semi-final clash at Newlands in Cape Town saw a lot of twist and turns before the home side sealed the deal in the end. Thirteen runs were required off the last six balls as pacer Shabnim Ismail (3/27) conceded just six runs, also picking the wicket of England Heather Knight on the third delivery to knock out the English team who were looking to feature in the summit clash for the fifth time.

Chasing 165, England Women opener Danielle Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley gave their team a flying start, scoring 53 runs in just five overs. With the game drifting away Ismail picked two wickets in three balls to get rid of Dunkley (28) and Alice Capsey (2). A mini partnership of 32 runs off 30 balls brewed between Wyatt (34) and Nat Sciver-Brunt before the former departed in the 11th over from senior pacer Ayabonga Khaka.

Brunt was joined by captain Heather Knight and the duo kept the 2009 champions in hunt with a 47-run partnership off 35 balls. Brunt looked the more dangerous of the two, hitting three boundaries in the 16th over. Just when it looked like she would run away with the match, Nadine Klerk helped South Africa see her back as Tazmin Brits grabbed her third sensational catch of the evening.

England were again under the pressure and Khaka(4/29) made the most of it by getting rid of Amy Jones, Sophie Ecclestone and Katherine Sciver-Brunt in the 18th over. 25 runs were needed of the last 12 balls and Knight slammed a six on the third ball as England collected 12 from the 19th over.

Wolvaardt, Brits punch hard on the big stage

After opting to bat first, openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits gave a flying start to their team by partnering for 96 runs off 82 balls. Wolvaardt was dismissed by Sophie Ecclestone in the 14th over but only after she scored 53 runs off 44 balls. Brits cut herself lose once Wolvaardt departed and smashed two sixes in the 15th over before smashing a boundary on the fifth delivery of the same over to bring up his seventh T20I fifty. Brit forged a 46-run partnership off 25 balls with Marizanne Kapp before getting out on the fifth ball of the 18th over. She scored 68 runs off 55 balls. The very attractive innings consisted of six fours and two sixes.

Proteas women were looking all set to post a target in excess of 180, however, a sensational 19th over from Ecclestone – the number one ranked T20I bowler – pulled back the momentum in England’s favour. The left-arm spinner gave away just three runs and picked the wickets of a dangerous Chloe Tryon (3) and Nadine de Klerk (3). With South Africa lurking four runs short of 150 after the end of the penultimate over, a special effort from Kapp was needed in the final and she stood on the expectations by hitting three boundaries including two on the fifth and sixth delivery to help South Africa finish at 164/4. Kapp remained unbeaten on 27 off 13.
