The World Car Awards named its 2022 winners at a ceremony during this year’s New York Auto Show. As a testament as to how the world’s automotive marketplace is shifting from combustion to electrification, and demonstrating how emission-free automobiles are equal or better than their gasoline or diesel counterparts, pure-electric vehicles took home most of the prestigious awards.
The top award — World Car of the Year — went to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, an all-electric SUV from a Korean automaker. The impressive Ioniq 5 took home two additional awards, earning the honor for World Electric Vehicle of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.

Another all-electric German vehicle — the Audi E-Tron GT — won World Performance Car of the Year honors. The World Urban Car of the Year award went to the Toyota Yaris Cross, a Japanese subcompact offering not sold in the North America market.

Launched in 2004, the annual World Car Awards is celebrating its 18th year. According to a Cision Insight’s 2021 media report, it is the number one awards program in the world for the ninth consecutive year in terms of media reach and analysis of twenty-five top global markets. This year’s jury is comprised of 103 professional automotive journalists — a diverse group from all over the globe — who are tasked with testing, reviewing, and voting for the best vehicle in each category.
“It is the mission of the World Car Awards and its 100+ global jurors to recognize, reward and inspire automotive excellence, leadership and innovation in a rapidly changing automotive industry on a global scale,” says the organization. For more information, visit the World Car Awards.
