A majority of the attendees of the World Cities Summit 2022 are city leaders & mayors however it is not an exclusive event for mayors.

A post on Twitter has started trending regarding Arvind Kejriwal’s upcoming visit to the World Cities Summit in 2022. This summit is to be held in Singapore. BJP National Secretary Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga posted the names of the attendees on Twitter and claimed that the summit in Singapore is for the Mayors around the world. In addition, Delhi CM Kejriwal Kejriwal is attacking the Indian government for not giving him permission to attend the summit. He also takes a jibe at Kejriwal saying that if the chief minister thinks that he is just a mayor then he should announce it publicly.

The tweet states, “Kejriwal is attacking Central Govt for not giving him permission to attend summit in Singapore. However, the summit is of Mayors, Kejriwal is a Chief Minister. If he thinks, he is just a Mayor he should announce publicly.”

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by visiting the World Cities Summit’s website that shows the list of attendees for this event that is scheduled from 31 July to 03 August 2022 in Singapore. We can see there the attendees include not only mayors but also ministers and leaders from different parts of the world. 

We also found that Hemali Boghawala who is Surat’s mayor can also be seen attending the event.

“The Summit is a convening point for global mayors, business leaders and knowledge experts to exchange and co-create city solutions for liveable and sustainable cities, and will engage cities, businesses and experts at the highest levels to discuss how cities can emerge stronger through prolonged and unpredictable disruptions.” says the World City Summit’s website.

Why is Delhi CM Arvidn Kejriwal unhappy?

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, was invited on June 1 by the Singapore government to present the development model of his city at World Cities Summit, which is scheduled to be conducted from July 31 to August 4 2022. Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena ultimately denied permission and rejected CM’s request to participate in the event.

Has previously any Indian chief minister attended this summit?


Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, who was the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the current leader of opposition attended the World Cities Summit in 2018. He discussed about the challenges of building a brand-new capital city at Amaravati with the help of the Singapore government.

Fact Crescendo found that the viral claim is false. World Cities Summit 2022 is not exclusively for Mayors. The summit includes global mayors, business leaders and knowledge experts. Former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh has also attended the same event in 2018. A majority of the attendees of the World Cities Summit 2022 are city leaders & mayors however it is not an exclusive event for mayors.
