World Radio Day 2023: One of the most accessible and popular medium of communication, radio has been in the communication way before TV, newspapers, mobiles or the internet. People eagerly waited for radio programmes to AIR so that they can hear news about their loved one in times of war, or know who won during sport matches. Till date, radio holds importance on those long drives in the car. From transistors to present day radio, this modality has been the source of breaking news and everything else that happened all over the world. Commemorating the importance of radio, every year, February 13 is celebrated as World Radio Day.

Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium.

World Radio Day: History, Significance, Theme

According to the United Nations, radio is a low-cost and popular medium, which can reach the remotest areas and the most marginalized people. It continues to broadcast when other media are out of action – for emergency communications or following a natural disaster. Finally, it is a medium that has been able to fully embrace technical developments, such as broadband and digital audio broadcasting (DAB), and to adapt to mobile devices.

The objective of World Radio Day is to raise public awareness of the importance of radio and to encourage decision makers to use it to provide access to information, and to improve international co-operation among broadcasters.

The theme for the 12th edition of the World Radio Day, to be celebrated on 13 February 2023, is ‘Radio and Peace.’

Interesting Facts About Radio

  1. The first true radio transmission of voice was made by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895.
  2. India’s radio broadcast history goes back to the early 1920s. During British rule, the first radio programme was broadcast in July 1923 by the Radio Club of Mumbai. Four months later, Calcutta Radio Club also went on air.
  3. With over 415 radio stations in about 23 languages and 146 dialects, AIR is one of the largest radio broadcasters in the world. It also has 99% population coverage and 18 FM channels.
  4. The iconic tune of All India Radio was composed by Walter Kaufmann.
  5. First news bulletin was broadcasted on January 19,1936 on AIR.
  6. On June 8, 1936, Indian State Broadcasting Service became All India Radio.
  7. Radio waves are a type of energy that travels in waves.
  8. Just like sound waves, radio waves travel through the air and can be sent from one place to another. But unlike sound waves, radio waves can travel even faster!
