World’s best nudist beach branded ‘a paradise’ but gets raided by police

A beautiful beach has been named the best seaside spot for nudists in the world – but that doesn’t mean it’s free from it’s share of controversies. The beach of Bolonia, in Tarifa, Spain, was also named the country’s best beach in 2023 by Traveler magazine.

The prestigious mag said it had “plenty of reasons to boast, and plenty of reasons to win”.

Meanwhile UK outlet Globehunters awarded it the coveted “best nudist beach” award, describing it as a “paradise”.

The beach stands out for its wonderful views, its golden sand and crystal clear waters, but also for its spectacular natural dune and its proximity to history through the Archaeological Ensemble of Baelo Claudia.

Globehunters gave Bolonia the award on the basis of the environment, safety, hours of sunshine and weather conditions of the place, among others.

While Bolonia is not entirely a nudist beach, nudism is practised in different areas such as El Chorrito, as well as in other areas more hidden from the view of bathers.

But recently the police had to descend on the beach to evict a hippie commune that had taken up residence there.

Last week the Civil Guard and Environmental Agents evicted fifty or so members of the hippie commune “Rainbow Family” who had camped in the surroundings of Boloni.

The hippies set up a tent and, around it, they sang, danced, meditated, practiced nudism and free love, prayed and lit a fire to heat their food. There were several tents in the area.

They set up in the heart of the Strait of Gibraltar Natural Park, a private estate whose owner filed a complaint with the Civil Guard.

Neighbours living near Bolonia warned the group posed a serious danger due to their bonfires in an area still recovering from a series of forest fires at the start of April.

The Rainbow Family also frequented shops in Bolonia to buy their food.

They claim to be vegans, enemies of technology and it is not possible to bring drugs of any kind to their meetings, and alcohol consumption is also forbidden.

In Benaocaz, before being evicted, they explained that they planned to camp there until the new moon on June 18.
