Kids will race their own Ferrari Formula 1 cars built from Lego bricks when Legoland California opens a new testing and racing facility next year billed as the world’s first attraction of its kind.
Lego Ferrari Build and Race will let kids build, test and race the distinctive Rosso red sports cars when the new interactive attraction debuts in spring 2022 at the Carlsbad theme park.
The Legoland attraction entrance will feature Ferrari racing history highlights as well race gear and awards made out of Lego bricks.
Visitors can sit in a life-size Ferrari F40 built from Lego bricks and pose for photos as they enter the garage area of the attraction.
Kids will build their own Lego Ferraris they can hold in their hands and test their creations on one of three pinewood derby-style racecourses — including a test zone and tracks designed to gauge top speeds and steering skills. Each track will clock the fastest race times.
Younger kids can create their own race cars in a Dublo build zone with bigger bricks.
After the race, visitors can digitally scan their custom-made cars and minifigure drivers to compete in a virtual race on a Lego version of Ferrari’s Pista di Fiorano research and development track in Italy. Racers will use a touchpad to control the speed of their cars and make turns.
Lego minifigure mechanics and pit crew members will be on hand throughout the entire experience.
Lego has long made Ferrari brick-building sets in varying skill and price levels ranging from the $16 F8 Tributo to the $170 488 GTE to the $430 430 Spider.
Ferrari has a long history of operating and partnering with theme parks. Ferrari World opened in Abu Dhabi in 2010 with the world’s fastest roller coaster — the 149 mph Formula Rossa — while Ferrari Land debuted in 2017 at Spain’s Portaventura with one of the world’s tallest coasters — the 367-foot-tall Red Force.
