Wrexham make unusual squad move ahead of Man Utd and Chelsea fixtures

Wrexham have made an unusual addition to their squad ahead of the team’s pre-season tour of the US – adding an American goalkeeper not signed with the club.

The League Two side have included Phillip Falcon III on their roster with the 6-foot-3-inch ‘keeper currently plying his trade for the University of Pennsylvania.

According to his SportsRecruits profile, he was named as the 2021 MLS NEXT Best GK of the Tournament (National Championship) and has been described as a “great shot stopper, [who] commands the team effectively, plays well out of the back under pressure, provides offensive opportunities for team, is strong/physically developed beyond his peers, [shows a] calm demeanor and leadership skills.”

According to Wrexham’s website, Falcon is set to play an important role in the squad. “We will also be joined in America by young, American goalkeeper Philip Falcon III, who will join the squad to bolster the goalkeeping options for training and on matchdays,” the club said.

Wrexham will be in the US for a two-week tour which includes four games. The Red Dragons will have their work cut out as they face a star-studded Chelsea side in the opening clash at the Kenan Memorial Stadium in North Carolina.

The team then heads to Los Angeles where they will take on LA Galaxy II at the Dignity Health Sports Park. A game against Manchester United at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium follows before a final trip to Subaru Park where they will round off the tour against Philadelphia Union II.

Falcon is one of four goalkeepers in the squad with Rob Lainton and Mark Howard also featuring, as well as the club’s first-choice shot-stopper Ben Foster.

Foster joined Wrexham in January and helped the side secure promotion to League Two. The 40-year-old made just eight appearances in total and has since agreed a new short-term extension to stay with the Welsh club.

Foster’s decision to carry on the fairytale story with Phil Parkinson’s team comes as little surprise following the club’s 2021 takeover by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The pair have enjoyed success after taking ownership of the historic club, and oversaw Wrexham’s first league title in 45 years. The takeover has also been charted by the docuseries Welcome to Wrexham which is detailing the club’s journey throughout the football leagues.
