Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney apologises to supporters over worrying post

Rob McElhenney has apologised to Wrexham fans after a cryptic Tweet suggested that the North Wales club was set to change its name to Wrexham United. The US actor’s club co-owner Ryan Reynolds caused a storm last week by Tweeting a graphic with the words ‘Wrexham United’ written on it alongside the caption: “Yes. This. Is Happening.”

McElhenney only added to the mystic further by retweeting it and adding: “Change is in the air.”

But it would later emerge that the Hollywood duo have actually secured United Airlines as the club’s new shirt sponsor for next season. The Wrexham team will also be flown out to the States by United Airlines for their upcoming preseason tour.

Perhaps by design, Reynold’s Tweet cause something of a stir among supporters online, with some concerned that the the historic name of the club was about to be alterered.

But a subsequent video released by the popular owners set the record straight and revealed a huge financial boost for the Reds Dragons as they prepare to return to the Football League for the first time in 15 years.

McElhenney said: “OK. That tweet needs some explanation,” before Reynolds added: “We stepped in, it was bound to happen.”

McElhenney continued: “When we tweeted Wrexham United, we forgot to include a super important ampersand.”

Reynolds explained: “Yeah, it should have read Wrexham and United, because Wrexham is going to be sponsored by United Airlines; it’s the front of shirt, which is super exciting. We just really wanted to share this.”

McElhenney stated: “We will not now nor will we ever change the name of the club. It’s probably illegal anyway.”

“Yeah if it’s not illegal, it should be,” Reynolds added. “Let’s make it illegal if we can do that legally.”

McElhenney added: “We are very sorry for the confusion,” before Reynolds concluded: “But we’re mostly excited. United, that’s a major airline. It’s a banner day for the team and the town.”

Reynolds was quickly reminded by his partner that Wrexham is actually a City and although the Deadpool actor admitted that he preferred the term town, McElhenney added: “I think we gotta button this up a little bit, Ryan. We are now EFL.”

Wrexham’s partnership with United Airlines is the latest in a string of commercial partners they have been able to attract to what was until recently a non-league club. Social Media brand TikTok was the club’s shirt sponsor last season alongside travel outfit Expedia.

Wrexham’s Racecourse stadium was recently renamed the STōK Racecourse after a deal was done with the American cold beverage brand.
