Wrexham are hoping to be a serious contender for promotion from League Two next season as they prepare to return to the Football League for the first time in 15 years. But one of their celebrity owners won’t be around for the start of the season due to his pre-existing Hollywood commitments.
The Red Dragons have seen their fortunes turned around completely by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who bought the North Wales club in November 2020 for £2million.
Since then, the US-based actors have invested £10m into the project and were rewarded for their sizeable efforts when Phil Parkinson’s team won the National League last season with a record-breaking 111 points.
With promotion from non-league football finally secured the next target is to relish the task of trying to win promotion into League One at the first time of asking. A double promotion was last achieved by Tranmere Rovers in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
But owner Reynolds will not be around to see Wrexham’s return to the Football League get underway. That’s because the Hollywood actor is set to miss the start of the season due to his commitments to the new Deadpool movie, which is set to be released in November.
According to the Mail, Reynolds is said to be ‘slightly annoyed’ that he will miss the start of his new club’s adventure in the football league. Instead, he will have to check on results from afar and rely on co-owner McElhenney to keep the ship steady.
Per the report, sources at Wrexham have revealed that the club’s wage bill will be double that of almost all of their League Two rivals.
Top scorer Paul Mullin has already committed his future to the Dragons by signing a new three-year deal and fans will be hoping that there will be more impressive developments to come.
A number of new sponsorship deals have already been put in place since promotion to the EFL was confirmed last month. Wrexham’s home, the Racecourse, has been renamed SToK Racecourse after Reynolds and McElHenney did a deal with SToK Cold Brew Coffee to sell naming rights for the club’s stadium for the first time in their history.
The deal comes as a new 5,000-seater stand is being built to replace the old condemned Kop terrace, taking the overall ground capacity to 15,000.
“We’re incredibly excited and a little over-caffeinated,” said McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in a joint statement.
Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively has also invested in the club, taking over sponsorship of a hospitality suite with her Betty Buzz beverage brand.
