Wrexham owners Reynolds and McElhenney broke their own celebrity ‘rule’

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney broke their own celebrity “rule” this season after vowing to ban stars as they thought they were “bad luck charms” following their 2022 FA Trophy final defeat to Bromley. Several screen stars graced the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham’s record-breaking promotion season, including Will Ferrell, Emma Corrin, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton, Joe Russo, and Paul Rudd.

“We had an unofficial rule that we didn’t stick to, Ryan after we lost at Wembley last year in the FA Trophy final,” co-owner and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star McElhenney said on the RobRyanRed – Wrexham AFC Podcast. “We decided no more celebrities as they were bad luck charms, but I guess we don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

Reynolds responded: “Yeah, it sort of worked out. Will [Ferrell] saw a great game, I know that. Emma [Corrin] saw an amazing match as well. Glenn [Howerton], Charlie [Day], and Kaitlin [Olson] saw a great one, and then, of course, Paul [Rudd] and Joe Russo saw the one [title-winning game] to end it.”

Celebrities will undoubtedly be there to watch Wrexham in Los Angeles this summer as the League Two team take on Premier League giants Manchester United in a pre-season friendly on July 26. “Well, the good news is we’re playing in Los Angeles, which makes things a lot easier because celebrities don’t like to travel outside of a 30-mile zone, so that’ll be helpful,” McElhenney quipped.

Wrexham will be hoping their stay in League Two is not short-lived following their historic 2022/23 season, which saw them take on two Championship teams in Coventry and Sheffield United in the FA Cup, as well as pip Notts County to the National League title with both teams clearing 100 points in the regular season.

The Wales-based club’s women’s team also went undefeated in their title-winning campaign, and McElhenney has even kept some of the grass from the pitch to commemorate the ladies’ success.
