KOLKATA: A day after the Bengal senior selectors named Wriddhiman Saha in the Bengal squad for the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal tie against Jharkhand, the wicketkeeper-batter had reportedly asked for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from his state association. Saha, who opted out of the Ranji Trophy league phase citing personal reasons, was not consulted before being named in the squad.
The Siliguri boy called up Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Avishek Dalmiya on Tuesday afternoon seeking release. Dalmiya had an initial talk with Saha who expressed his displeasure about some CAB officials raising questions about his commitment for Bengal. It was learnt that Saha was so hurt by such allegations that he decided to cut all his ties with Bengal cricket.
Dalmiya, himself, however did not confirm anything on the matter refusing to comment till he receives any such request in writing. But the CAB top brass met in the evening on an emergency basis to discuss the Saha issue. A veteran of 40 Test matches, Saha’s days with the national side is said to be over after the team management expressed such a view to him. However, still being a BCCI contracted player, Saha was not ready to call it a day and did well for his side Gujarat Titans in this IPL.
The 37-year-old player felt his home association had not stood beside him when he needed them at this junction of his career. Instead he was pained to see how some officials inside the CAB corridors have tried to belittle his contribution for the state side.
Saha informed the CAB early in order to give them time to choose an alternative player. He has decided to submit his request in writing after the IPL is over.
