WTC Final 2023: Shubman Gill tweets after controversial dismissal on Day 4

Shubman Gill, who until that point added a quick 41 runs for the opening wicket with skipper Rohit Sharma as Australia set a target of 444 runs to chase, had a blank reaction on his face after the big screen signalled out. The batter then took to Twitter to criticise the decision with facepalm emoji.

Shubman Gill added no text to his Tweet but a large portion of Indian fans made their feelings apparent on Twitter while fans at the Oval also chanted ‘Cheat, Cheat, Cheat’ moments after Shubman Gill was adjudged not out.

The decision was criticised by several former Indian cricketers too as Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer trolled the decision using memes while Ravi Shastri was heard saying on air that the decision would have been not out if Steve Smith was at the crease.

Many of the fans argued that the soft signal should have been out as the benefit of doubt should have gone in favour of the batter as it wasn’t certain if Cameron Green got enough fingers underneath the ball.

ICC later released a statement reminding that the rule of soft signal became obsolete from June and came into effect during England vs Ireland one-off Test earlier this month.

“The on-field umpires will consult with the TV umpire before any decisions are taken,” the ICC confirmed when the changes was announced in May.

“Soft signals have been discussed at previous cricket committee meetings over the last couple of years,” Sourav Ganguly of the Men’s Cricket Committee added.

“The committee deliberated this at length and concluded that soft signals were unnecessary and at times confusing since referrals of catches may seem inconclusive in replays.”
