Rahane, who has represented India in 82 Test matches, was named in the squad after the injury setback to Shreyas Iyer. His form in the Ranji Trophy and IPL 2023 also helped him grab the attention of the selectors.
The Mumbai veteran has recalled the backing from his family and the emotions which bursted out after being named in India’s 15-member squad for the WTC final. He has added that he would not like to experiment much and look to continue his good batting form.
“Really happy to be back with the Indian team after 18-19 months. This is something really special for me. I just want to keep continuing my batting form, don’t want to think too much about the format, T20 or Test cricket.
The way I am batting right now, I don’t want to complicate things, the more I keep it simple, it will be better. It was an emotional moment for me. When I got dropped, the support from my family was massive, really important,” Ajinkya Rahane said in a video posted by BCCI.
“Playing for India matters a lot for me. I worked hard on my fitness, my batting, my game plan, went back to domestic cricket, and had a very good domestic season for Mumbai. When I got the call, that moment was really emotional for me and my family as well,” he added.
Rahane is expected to play a key role in the WTC final against Australia from June 7 at The Oval. He is expected to come out to bat at number five and put in all his experience of playing in English conditions to help India post solid totals on the board.
