Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley and the new mid-card title holder from NXT, Dominik Mysterio showed up backstage on Smackdown to feature in an interview with Kayla Braxton. Dominik admittedly wanted to show his “deadbeat Dad what a real champion looks like.”
While teasing Rey Mysterio, Butch interrupted and challenged him to a title match, right there. Dirty Dom wasn’t prepared, and more than that there wasn’t anyone from NXT to book him in a Title match.
At this point, NXT head booker and WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels showed up and proposed that Dominik should go through his first title defense against Butch on Smackdown to make the official for later that night.
When the match took place, a lot of shenanigans went down capitalizing on which Dominik Mysterio defeated Butch to retain the NXT North American Championship. Just like the title win, Rhea Ripley had a huge contribution to the title retention.
The Women’s World Champion attacked Butch’s knee during the ending moments of the match allowing Dom to pick up the win. Also, d ring the match, Pretty Deadly – Kit Wilson and Elton Prince came out to confront Butch’s buddy Ridge Holland.
Kit confronted Holland for injuring Elton Prince last week and told him to apologize. Kit eventually attacked Ridge, which led to Butch attacking Kit. Kit then ran backstage so that Holland follows him and clear the ringside area.
As a result, Dominik already secured a successful title defense by his name after the controversial title win on the July 18th episode of WWE NXT where defeated the former champion Wes Lee for the NXT North American Title.
Dom’s father, Rey Mysterio is also back on the title hunt as he defeated Cameron Grimes, Sheamus, and LA Knight in a Fatal-4-Way United States Championship Invitational in the opening contest of Smackdown.
United States Champion Austin Theory attacked Mysterio during the match, forcing LWO member Santos Escobar to come out and lure him to the backstage area. Mysterio then pinned Knight to secure the big win.
Interestingly, Mysterio will now face fellow LWO cohort Escobar on next week’s SmackDown, with the winner facing Theory for the US Title. While the title match isn’t officially announced, it could go down at Summerslam in early August.
