Xcel Energy will build a new service center, office and warehouse facility in Aurora after a recent $2.7 million land purchase.

The Wednesday announcement by CBRE, a commercial real estate services and investment firm, detailed the utility company’s acquisition of 10 acres at HighPoint Elevated, a 5 million-square-foot industrial park near Denver International Airport at the southeast corner of East 64th Avenue and E-470.

Construction, which will be facilitated by the park’s project developers Hyde Development and Mortenson, is set to start early next year at the northwest corner of 66th Avenue and Denali Street.

“The facility at HighPoint will provide easy access for Xcel Energy to better service our customers in the growing areas of Aurora and further east as well as Denver International Airport,” said Robert Kenney, president of Xcel Energy-Colorado. “The facility will allow for a faster response time to service calls and will have room to house the equipment needed to grow our operations.”

Kenney recently succeeded former president Alice Jackson, joining the company in June from San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
