Yashasvi Jaiswal’s father goes on a pilgrimage, takes up Kanwar Yatra in Uttar Pradesh to thank Lord Shiva

The 21-year-old slammed a record-breaking ton and remained unbeaten on 143 at the close of play on day two of the opening Test at Windsor Park in Dominica. He shared a mammoth 229-run stand with captain Rohit Sharma – who also slammed a ton in the game.

Jaiswal reached the triple-figure mark in 215 balls with Rohit also making a vital contribution up front. The partnership of 229 runs was the highest opening partnership for India against the West Indies in Tests. The duo thus overtook the 159-run stand between Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer in the 2006 Gros Islet Test.

Delighted to score his maiden century on debut, Jaiswal – while interacting with the broadcasters – claimed this is just the ‘start’ and revealed how the skipper’s words ahead of the opening Test inspired him to do well. Jaiswal – who plays for Mumbai in the domestic circuit – while speaking about his knock said, “We spoke a lot. All the time, he (Rohit bhai) kept telling me from where do I get my runs from, and how to negotiate the bowlers.”

“Before the game also there was a lot of discussion. He told me ‘you have to do it, you are the only person’, I kept thinking about that and how I can get my runs. I’ve learnt a lot from this game, hope to continue.”

“It makes a big difference when your legendary players in the team talk to you, I try to pick their brains. We (Rohit bhai and I) had a good communication going.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal does his family & region proud

It’s been a fairytale journey for the teenage prodigy who came up the ranks in Mumbai cricket after migrating to the ‘Maximum City’ from a remote place in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Jaiswal comes from a humble background and his parents – Bhupendra Jaiswal and Kanchan Jaiswal – still reside in a town named Suriyawan in UP’s Bhadohi district. The entire family is feeling immense joy and happiness as their son is making the region proud by shining on the biggest stage.

Yashasvi’s father Bhupendra – who owns a paint shop in his native place – is on cloud nine watching his son create history. He’s elated with the feat of his ward and is thanking the deities for helping Yashasvi achieve success in his enterprise.

With the holy Hindu month of Shravan going on, the left-handed batter’s father has decided to participate in the Kanwar Yatra and thank Lord Shiva for bestowing his son with his blessings.

Clad in the traditional saffron, the attire donned by Kanwariyas – the pilgrims in North India who carry the holy Ganga water and travel hundreds of kilometres on foot to perform jalabhishekam of Shivalinga, especially on Mondays- Bhupendra claimed he’s immensely proud of his son.

While interacting with media persons before boarding the train to fetch the Holy Ganga water, Bhupendra said he is thankful to Lord Shiva for bestowing his blessings on his son and he prays his son converts his ton into a double hundred and may his son achieve greater heights. Keeping this desire in his heart, he’s undertaking this pilgrimage.
