Spoiler Warning: Yellowjackets Season One
It’s been nearly four months since the epic Showtime psychological drama series Yellowjackets ended season one. However, if you followed the first season, especially the finale, you know that it left us with more questions than answers. Now, it’s only understandable that we all wait eagerly for the second season to arrive, and thankfully, Yellowjackets has officially been renewed for season 2. Variety recently reported about the renewal of the second installment of this highly anticipated series, including when it will be going into production.
When asked about the renewal, Showtime entertainment president Gary Levine went on to say in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
“We are overwhelmed by both the acclaim and the audience response to our series including several ‘Best of 2021’ lists, a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and snowballing viewership. Clearly, there is a hunger for originality and audacity, and our incredible showrunners Ashley [Lyle}, Bart [Nickerson], and Jonathan [Lisco], along with their pitch-perfect cast, have delivered that and so much more. I can’t wait to see the surprises they have in store for us in Season 2.”
For the last few months, Yellowjackets has become one of TV’s most talked-about shows. Even the critics have given it some phenomenal reviews. Fans on Twitter and Reddit have been endlessly sharing their theories on the show and the upcoming season. With all of this excitement around the show, we can’t wait to tell you everything we know about the second season of Yellowjackets.
Yellowjackets S2: The Expected Plot
In the first season of Yellowjackets, we saw several of the stranded titular soccer players fearing for the oncoming winter season, as fending for themselves would be even more challenging when on a deserted island. The show had already hinted at a couple of those dangers — when Jackie, played by Ella Purnell, froze to death on a night when there wasn’t supposed even to be any cold, let alone a night that was supposedly producing snow. The second season will be peeling back all of these layers and more.
Though the second season will be filmed during the summers, you can be assured that the showrunners will continue the winter storyline. In fact, in an interview, Lyle went on to say that the season is aptly titled “The Winter of Their Discontent” in a playful nod to Richard III, the famous first few lines of William Shakespeare’s play and John Steinbeck’s seminal final novel.
When asked about the specifics of the upcoming season, showrunner Bart Nickerson went on to tell Deadline:
“I think what the show always kind of aspires to do is continue to evolve and become more itself but also have a tremendous continuity with what came before. We are watching the emergence of a religiosity in ’96 and seeing the ramifications of that and the rebirth of that in the present day. I think that that kind of trajectory will continue to hopefully keep the show – you don’t have to completely start from scratch each season. Hopefully, this sort of the tone and the feel of the show will continue to become fuller and more itself.””There are a lot of opportunities where we’re going and where we’ve been planning to go get darker and get weirder. We’ll likely get a lot more of both of those things but hopefully we can keep it fun.”
Since Yellowjackets is known for its unexpected twists and turns, we will have to patiently wait until the second season premieres to know the exact storyline.
Yellowjackets S2: The Expected Cast
Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, Melanie Lynskey, and Tawny Cypress will return to the show. Lynskey, in particular, has a lot to celebrate since she won the Best Lead Actress at the Critics Choice Awards. With the teens, we can expect Sophie Thatcher, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Nélisse, and Samantha Hanratty to return. And as it was revealed in the finale that Adult Lottie was wreaking havoc out there, we can expect Courtney Eaton to return too.
It’s easy to assume that Ella Purnell’s character reached its conclusion since she froze to death. But considering how unpredictable this show is, we can’t confirm that. The same goes for fellow teens Jane Widdop, Keeya King, Liv Hewson, and Alexa Barajas, and for the boys Luciano Leroux and Kevin Alves. In the flashback storyline, the last time we checked that everyone was still alive. So, we wonder whether they’ll still be in season 2.
Yellowjackets S2: Possible Release Date
It’s obviously too soon to know about the exact release date for the second season. As reported by Variety, the second season will most probably go into production sometime in the late summer of this year, as stated by the showrunners Bart Nickerson and Ashley Lyle. Yellowjacket’s renewal was announced by Showtime in December 2021, way before the first season even concluded.
In an interview with Vulture, when Levine was asked about a possible release date for season 2, he said:
“We are working towards a premiere at the end of 2022. We’d love to stay on an annual cycle. I think our audiences deserve that, and I also think that when you have a show that has this kind of a momentum, you don’t want to let it dissolve.”
We can likely see season 2 dropping at the end of this year by the looks of it.
