FOR the very first time our holiday plans did not centre around us — instead we were looking for a place to take our newest family member, our dog!
We wanted all the usual things — comfort, relaxation and somewhere our son Jacob, 11, wouldn’t get bored but add in dog-friendly, with plenty of walks on the doorstep into the mix and that limits the choice.
A staycation for sure but where? After what seemed like a week of Googling the whole of the UK, we spotted lovely Corner Cottage in Ingleton, North Yorkshire.
It had all we needed. Walking and exploring on the doorstep, bigger cities nearby for entertainment and shopping and most importantly room for us all — including Rex.
We booked through Sykes Cottages after pals recommended them and their reviews online for the cottage were excellent.
The owner had left us a lovely hamper with crisps, local cheese and chocolate to welcome us and there was even a little doggy hamper for our pup.
Jacob raced upstairs to pick his bed and was quick to come back and tell Laura and I how “stunning” and “huge” the bathroom was.
The cottage is set over two floors, with two double rooms, a kitchen, separate dining room and that stunning bathroom — complete with a massive walk-in shower.
The sitting room had plenty of space for us all with two big comfy couches and a cosy wood burner.
Our first day was spent walking around the quaint little town which is overlooked by the second-highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounded by dramatic scenery.
We discovered a gorgeous waterfall trail, a five mile circular route, that starts in the town so Jacob and I decided to head off and walk that.
As it was lambing season Laura stayed back to relax in the cottage with Rex — we didn’t want any sheep getting a fright from our over zealous ten-month-old!
Before we found any waterfalls we stumbled across the Ingleton ‘money tree’, a fallen trunk with thousands of coins hammered into it — it’s claimed that people who hammer a coin make a wish and it is hoped that it will bring them good luck.
And our luck was certainly in that day, because just after finally finding the stunning waterfalls, we discovered an ice cream van at the top of the hill — well fate told us a 99 was just reward for our healthy hike.
The next day we explored the town and took a walk along the main street and into some of the many artisan shops.
And there were plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and quite a few pubs to enjoy a pint or two. We were spoilt for choice when it came to eating out.

A week at Corner Cottage in Ingleton, North Yorkshire starts from £424 a week. It sleeps four in two bedrooms and welcomes pets. See sykescottages.co.uk or call 01244500579.
The local pub offered an excellent choice of British favourites and the town’s only Indian restaurant offered a great selection of curries.
For such a small place it sure packs a culinary punch. Despite our daily walks and hikes, I am sure we all came home a little heavier!
Ingleton also boasts the longest working pottery in the Dales and we were lucky to get the chance to watch the potters at work.
On our final day we took a trip to the Ingleborough Cave. It was a stunning two-mile walk to get to its entrance.
Ingleton is perfectly placed if you want peace and quiet, but big cities such as Lancaster and seaside resorts including Morecambe are only a short drive away.
The village even has an open-air swimming pool which, unfortunately, only opens in the summer months.
Or maybe that is fortunate after all — it gives us all a good excuse for a return visit and Corner Cottage will most definitely be our holiday home from home.
