You can lease Walt Disney’s Storybook Mansion for $40,000 a month

A hilltop home that Walt Disney built during the Great Depression in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Los Feliz near Griffith Park is available to lease for the first time.

The monthly rent is $40,000.

Known as Walt Disney’s Storybook Mansion, the 6,388-square-foot house designed by Disney studio architect Frank Crowhurst and completed in 1932 is a blend of French Provincial, French Tudor and Neo-Gothic architectural styles. It has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and a theater “where Walt watched dailies of his productions,” the listing reads.

Disney and his wife, Lillian, raised daughters Diane and Sharon in the house. It remained in the family through 1950.

The home is now owned by Timur Bekmambetov, a Russian-Kazakh filmmaker known for such films as “Wanted,” “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and the 2016 remake of “Ben-Hur.” It’s held in an LLC.

Records show the property changed hands in August 2011 for $3.7 million.

Since taking ownership, Bekmambetov has restored the house he now rents out. He previously opened it up to filming and occasional tours.

Near the pool at the rear of the 1-acre lot is a “Snow White”-inspired Seven Dwarfs Cottage playhouse built as a Christmas present for the girls, the Orange County Register reported in 2021. The pool was a later addition.

A manicured landscape with a large lawn and brick-paved walkways surrounds the house. There’s a trellis-covered dining patio off the side entrance.

The front door opens to reveal a rotunda entrance with a hand-painted ceiling. It leads into the living room with a high vaulted wood-beamed ceiling, wood-paneled walls, a brick fireplace and original leaded windows with views of Downtown LA.

Elsewhere, the formal dining room flows into the kitchen that the listing describes as “a perfect mix of modern convenience and old warm charm.” Characteristics include a center island, high-end appliances, marble counters, custom cabinets, a walk-in pantry, a breakfast nook and stained glass windows.

Climb the circular staircase to the bedrooms, including the primary suite. It features ample closet space and a bathroom done in period tile with dual vanities, a large dual-head shower and a separate tub.

A family room with vaulted ceilings and a former sleep porch round out the second floor.
