You can now pick your own EV exhaust sound

In a bid to help bridge the mental gap between internal combustion and electric vehicles, car brands have started fitting speakers on the outside of electric vehicles to mimic the sound an internal combustion car would make.

Some, like Hyundai, will also allow you to customise the sound the car makes when the ‘exhaust’ revs. Well, they will, when the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 N launch from next year.

We had the chance to sample the upcoming Hyundai RN22e recently and one thing that stood out was the crazy sound it made when it accelerated.

You can watch and listen to the ‘exhaust’ sound on TikTok or watch our review of the RN22e below.

Hyundai plans to allow customers to pick their own type of sound to be played from the speaker, in addition to potentially creating their own sounds to upload to the vehicle.

This is in addition to the brand working on simulated gear shifts using motor pulses during acceleration, they will also be linked to a mode on the paddle shifters that allows the drive to feel like they are moving between fixed gears.

Porsche sells the Taycan with an optional external speaker, but the sound can’t be customised for acceleration sound. Tesla also sells some of its vehicles with an external speaker, but it’s not linked to acceleration sound.

Moreover, the recent Charger Daytona SRT Concept features what Dodge calls a Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, an “industry-first BEV exhaust” that can reach 126dB. That makes it as loud as a Hellcat-powered Dodge.

Sound is pushed through an amplifier and tuning chamber located at the rear of the vehicle.
