Audi AG is rolling out YouTube integration into “various models” in its global line-up via its MMI infotainment system – though it’s unclear when this feature will be available to Australian owners.
The German marque has released a YouTube application is now available to download for “selected Audi models” during the European summer (Jun-Aug), with other VW Group brands to follow, the company has confirmed.
“Whether during charging stops, driving breaks, or to make waiting more enjoyable – live streams, news, and videos from popular YouTubers can now allow everyone in the vehicle to make the most of their time. The app works just like the YouTube app on a smartphone,” Audi says in its media release.
“After installing the app in the store, it appears in the MMI and is launched by tapping the icon. To meet Audi’s high safety requirements, occupants can only play videos when the vehicle is parked.”
The first Audi models to offer compatibility with the new YouTube application will be the A4, A5, Q5, A6, A7, A8, Q8 e-tron and e-tron GT from the 2024 model year. Vehicles need to be fitted with the optional data link system and the Audi app store.
Further, the launch markets for the Audi MMI YouTube integration will include Europe, Canada and the United States. Audi says “the system will later be rolled out to other regions and other Volkswagen Group brands”.
YouTube is the first video platform to be available via Audi’s new native app store, co-developed by Volkswagen’s CARIAD software company and partner HARMAN Ignite, a subsidiary of Korea’s Samsung.
Audi joins a handful of other manufacturers that allow streaming services like YouTube via their vehicle’s infotainment systems, namely including Tesla as well as Polestar and Volvo.
CarExpert has reached out to Audi Australia for further comments around local prospects and is awaiting a response.
