A Perth wellness influencer has given reasons why she has chosen to remain child-free saying you “can rehome a puppy” but will always be a mother.
Madalin Giorgetta penned a well-thought-out essay about her choice for her more than 682,000 followers on Instagram.
Giorgetta wrote that during COVID lockdowns she was feeling unmotivated and bored, and didn’t know how to move forward with her life.
“Maybe I should have a child,” she wrote. “That seems to make a lot of people happy. A child will fix this, something to put my energy into”.
She told her partner she would contemplate her decision for a year but after just a few weeks Giorgetta decided she did not want a child.
In beautifully written prose, Giorgetta explained that having a child is a solid decision.
She listed getting married, buying a house, adopting a puppy, and having a child as firm choices that direct our lives and close down “infinite options available to us”.
“We can divorce, sell the house, re-home the puppy, but I will always be a mother,” she wrote.
“I’m 33, married, and all my friends are having babies. ‘When are you having a baby?’ is a recurrent theme,” Giorgetta wrote.
“When I reply, ‘we’re not having children’, most people respond with sadness, disappointment, disbelief (you’ll change your mind!) or a shake of the head that implies I am making a huge mistake.”
It’s not that Giorgetta doesn’t like children either, the influencer wrote that she thinks they’re cute.
Giorgetta sees other people’s children as a “majestic redwood in an old growth forest”, and is in awe of their perfection and beauty but with “no desire to cut it down and strap it to the roof of my car”.
She wrote that there are plenty of reasons not to have children, including, not liking them and valuing:
- freedom
- silence
- money
- sleep
- career
- travel
- spontaneity
- solitude; and
- cleanliness.
Giorgetta said she values sleep and solitude, but if she had a deep desire for a child it would outweigh those values.
However, the writer said she does not possess that deep desire.
Giorgetta wrote that choosing the child-free lifestyle does not mean that she judges people with children.
And when she’s told she will never experience unconditional love without giving birth, Giorgetta wrote that unconditional love is for everyone.
