It has been called by some “CPR without the smooch,” and according to the American Heart Association hands-only CPR is as effective in the first few minutes of a heart attack as conventional CPR — which involves a mouth-to-mouth effort to save someone’s life.
Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Health launched its L.A. County Heart Heroes 2023 campaign on Thursday, April 6 at the Hollywood/Wilshire Wellness Center. Medical experts joined top sports teams to promote hands-only CPR, including representatives from the Dodgers, Rams, Chargers and Los Angeles Football Club.
Under the two simple rules of hands-only CPR, you immediately call 911 when you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse. Second, the American Heart Association says, “Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of a familiar song that has 100 to 120 beats per minute.”
Seriously folks. To keep pace with 100 to 120 beats per minute, you hum a song that matches that beat while you push on the center of the person’s chest. Great songs that can help you save a life include “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira” or “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash.
But only 40% of people in need get prompt help before the emergency responders arrive. Hands-only CPR focuses on those first few minutes. Chest compressions, by hand, move oxygen through a person’s body to keep their brain and other vital organs alive. That, in turn, buys time while professional help arrives.
The county’s Department of Public Health is committed to training 500,000 county residents in hands-only CPR, or HOCPR, by December 31, 2023.
You, your friends and family members can learn how to perform hands-only CPR at easy training sessions throughout 2023. Trainings will be held at sporting events, entertainment venues, churches, college and school campuses, worksites, malls, and other places throughout L.A. County.
To find training near you, go to http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/heart/index.htm under “training opportunities.” Groups with more than 150 participants can ask the county to come to them.
