In You, I love that scene where Theo has the boombox and is playing Lorde’s “Supercut” for Love and says something like, “I heard that’s what people from your generation want.” Such a troll. What did you think of that scene in the moment?
Dylan: The boombox, holding the boombox outside the house is so iconic, so I’m glad I got to experience that. It’s actually funny, because I’m a year older than Victoria [Pedretti], and much older than my character, so those moments where she’s referring to me as a teenager were always really funny because I’m older than she is. But yeah, we had a lot of fun with those scenes, but it’s also very heartbreaking. We figured out a way to make it fun and charming.
What do you think Love and Theo were drawn to in each other?
Dylan: I think for Theo, his family life is not very stable, he doesn’t really have a support system. There’s this really interesting balance between him seeing her as a support system and in a weird way, almost a mother figure, but not totally like that, of course. He’s trying to find someone that he can love, and that can love him back. If I were to dive into Love’s side, obviously she loses her brother in the second season, so there’s this missing piece she’s searching for, trying to find someone to care for. She finds that in Theo.
It makes it all the more ironic that you could have played Forty.
Dylan: I know, right?
Through it all, Theo is desperate to cling to this belief that it’s not true about what Love has done, that it must be Joe’s fault. What is going through his mind when he’s grappling with that? What did that make you think about?
Dylan: I think he’s blinded by love, in more ways than one. He’s so head over heels that he found this person he really connects with. It almost feels like toward the end a little like Romeo and Juliet, where’s he swept up in this romantic idea of running away together and saving her. He’s desperate for connection, desperate to find some comfort, stability. At a certain point, when you feel like it’s your last chance, you go for it. It’s hard to see the flaws when you’re so wrapped up in it.
Where do you think Theo ends up? Would he ever try to “avenge” Love? Is he moving on?
Dylan: I think it’s definitely going to be hard for him to trust anyone to love again after that whole debacle. I definitely thought about, it could be interesting if he goes and tries to avenge her. He’ll probably try to move on with his life and figure out how to be happy after all of that.
A lot of therapy in his future.
Dylan: A lot of therapy. Maybe he could use the same therapist [Joe and Love] use.
