The 32-year-old has played 72 ODIs and 75 T20I matches for India since his debut in 2016 but is yet to get a Test call-up. Kuldeep Yadav, Chahal’s close friend and his spin partner in white-ball cricket, has regularly been included in the Test squad as well.
Chahal, who represents Haryana in domestic cricket, has played 33 first-class matches and picked 87 wickets at an average of 35.25. He has just two five-wicket hauls in the format.
“Every cricketer has a dream of representing his/her team on the international platform. And they reach the pinnacle when they wear whites and play red-ball cricket. I have a similar dream too. I have achieved a lot in white-ball cricket, but red-ball is still on my checklist. I still have the dream of getting the tag of ‘Test cricketer’ next to my name.
I try to give my best in domestic and Ranji games so as to fulfill this dream of mine, and I hope to get the opportunity of representing the Indian Test team soon,” Chahal told CricTracker in an interview.
However, chances of Chahal being inducted in the India Test squad are really low. Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is still hungry and going strong, while Ravindra Jadeja has made himself completely indispensable. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav also feature regularly in the Indian Test team. Washington Sundar is also a spin-bowling all-rounder standing in the queue.
The comment from Chahal just after India’s 209-run defeat in the World Test Championship final (WTC Final) and just ahead of Team India’s selection for the two-Test series against West Indies which kick starts from July 12 in Dominica.
