It’s been over two years since Max released Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the movie that was originally set to hit theaters in 2017 as part of DC’s Snyderverse, but for a family tragedy the director couldn’t finish it. Instead, Joss Whedon took charge of the project and his version of the movie was the one exhibited in theaters. But it was a huge fail, which made fans eager to see Zack Snyder’s version.
The 2021 film was the result of a strong fan campaign on social media, events and more asking to see the original director’s cut of the project supported by the cast and crew, something that’s still happening with 2016’s Suicide Squad which reportedly has a David Ayer’s cut.
When Warner Bros. Discovery launched its streaming platform, the company did not hesitate to take advantage of the large following of Snyder’s universe and confirmed the release of the film, which required several reshoots and an increase in its initial budget.
Until now, even with the DC fandom still divided after the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as CEO’s and those primarily responsible for the future of the franchise, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is considered one of the best productions based on the comic book company’s characters. So it came as a surprise when its trailer disappeared from Max’s YouTube channel, being the one that had the most views.
As if this was not strange enough, it seems that Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League has also been removed from all European Max platforms, with only North American subscribers still being able to watch the movie.
Why Max Had to Hide Zack Snyder’s Justice League Trailer?
Twitter user George_TeamLH was the one who noticed the absence of the video on the YouTube page of the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform:
“The MAX YouTube channel has deleted the first trailer of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ which was the most popular video they had at around 31M+ views.”
Fortunately, Screen Rant was able to find out the reason behind what happened. The outlet revealed that the studio confirmed to them that the reason behind the disappearance of the trailer is due to a music rights issue, and that they have had to hide it and keep it private until they manage to resolve the conflict.
It is currently unclear whether this is the same issue facing the movie itself, but it seems a very drastic move, although not an unprecedented one. In the last few years, the arrival of many older TV shows on various streaming platforms has seen some episodes being released late or dropped entirely in certain territories due to music rights causing problems.
While this kind of removal is usually resolved relatively quickly, especially for big movies, whether music rights are the sole reason for the removal is yet to be confirmed. One thing that seems unlikely is that this removal is permanent and anything to do with Warner Bros. Discovery’s cost cutting, as that would have likely seen the movie removed from all territories.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League has a runtime of four hours and two minutes, doubling the duration of the version that was seen in theaters in 2017. This is because under the vision of the original director each hero of the group had the chance to tell their story in depth, further exploring the ties between the characters to build a more believable bond between them, as Snyder’s goal was for them to found the Justice League and in the sequel work together to fight crime already as an established team.
The movie starred Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg, Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash.
