Zendaya Abandoned Her Bob for a Surprise Performance at Coachella

Coachella is all about surprise performances and celebrity sightings, but weekend two had a truly massive surprise in store: Zendaya! The Euphoria star wasn’t in the crowd solely to enjoy the music, either; she joined collaborator Labrinth onstage to perform for the first time in almost ten (!!) years, and she even ditched her bob for the occasion.

Zendaya shocked the crowd when she walked onstage to perform “All For Us” and “I’m Tired” from the HBO series with Labrinth, but it wasn’t just the fact that she was holding a microphone and singing that had jaws dropping all over the desert. In place of her cute swoopy bob were extra long and voluminous waves flowing down her back all the way to her hips — perhaps a reference to her Euphoria character Rue and her cascading curls?

This is a pretty big departure, hair-wise, for Zendaya, who has been living the short hair life life as of late, sporting a warm, golden brunette color alongside the cropped cut. But obviously she had to shake things up for Coachella; long hair just screams pop star. She paired the flowing curls with a very Y2K-esque ensemble of a pink babydoll dress layered over a white top, knee-high lace-up boots and hoop earrings. “I cannot express my gratitude enough for this magical night,” she wrote on Instagram Stories after her performance. “Thank you to my brother Labrinth for inviting me and giving me the most beautiful safe space to be on a stage again. My heart is so full. I can’t thank you enough for the love I received tonight, made all my nerves melt away.”

Zendaya isn’t the only celeb who did a dramatic hair change-up during the California festival. For weekend one, Charli D’Amelio went from long black hair to a platinum bob basically overnight, and Saweetie rocked a hand-painted rainbow. It’s a good thing Z showed up for weekend two, because I don’t know how anyone could top that kind of surprise.
