American electric motorcycle maker Zero Motors says it sold nearly 300 electric motorcycles to the country of Indonesia ahead of the G 20 summit that is currently wrapping up in Bali. The exact number of motorcycles was not specified by Zero.
“The use of an all-electric transportation fleet by the hosting government marks a new milestone for one of the world’s largest economies as it lessens its dependency on fossil fuels and moves toward net-neutral emissions,” Zero said in a press release obtained by Forbes.com.

“We are extremely proud to have delivered all of these motorcycles and we look forward to building on our relationships with both Zero and the Indonesian government.” said Harun Sjech, CEO of PT, Elektrick Motoriz Global, the importer for Zero Motorcycles in Indonesia. Zero gave Forbes.com photos of the delivered bikes in Indonesian livery and said “the Zero DSRP (Police) motorcycle available exclusively to global fleet operators and authority forces, plus the widely available SR/S and SR/F premium models that had been modified for tactical use by the Indonesian security apparatus were all included as part of the governmental purchase order.”
The Zero SR/S has an MSRP of $20,495 while the SR/F retails for $20,095. Zero released photos of the bikes in Indonesian police livery, but no specific details about the cost of the bikes plus the accessories to codify them as police vehicles were released.
Forbes.com has ridden and reviewed many Zero motorcycles, including the SR/S model, which features a claimed 187 miles of urban riding range and a top speed of 124 mph. The SR/F model boasts similar performance numbers and is technically similar to the SR/S but does not include a windscreen and also weighs 18 pounds less than the SR/S. Specifications for the DSR/P model have not been made public but are likely similar.
The sale marks a large bulk for Zero, which is based in Santa Cruz, California and was founded in 2006. The company operates in 40 countries and is generally regarded as the market leader in full-size electric motorcycles, despite the recent entry into the market by Harley-Davidson with their LiveWire brand and announcements by Kawasaki that they will debut an electric and a hybrid models as soon as 2023.
Other large-scale legacy motorcycle makers have also signaled that they will produce electric models at some point, especially in light of announcements by some countries that new gas-powered vehicles will be banned from sale as early as 2030. With climate change a key topic at the 2022 G 20 meeting, Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has called for all of Indonesia’s government transportation vehicles to transition to electric operation.
“Meeting the ambitious zero-emissions goals set by President Joko Widodo was made possible thanks to the excellent partnership with both Zero motorcycles and the Indonesian Government, both organizations that are highly motivated to be leaders in transitioning away from fossil fuels,” said Harun Sjech, said in the press release.
Zero offer a range of ten electric motorcycle models, from urban-focused models like the FXE to high-powered performance machines like the SR/S and recently introduced DSR/X Adventure model. Despite its top spot in the nascent electric motorcycle market, Zero continues to raise operating capital and recently secured $107 million from backers including Polaris, Hero (of India), Exor and private investors. Zero also makes electric powertrain components for other manufacturers, including powersports maker Polaris.
Privately held Zero does not disclose sales figures or the number of units they have sold.
