Zodiac nails are shaping up to be the biggest trend when Mercury is in retrograde

It all started with Megan Fox. She may be taking an Instagram hiatus, but her zodiac nails definitely haven’t given the number of times the image has been shared. The reason for their popularity? The aesthetic couldn’t be more on trend given Mercury is currently in retrograde for the first time this year.

After Brittney Boyce – favourite manicurist to the Transformers actor – posted about the almond-shaped tips and monochrome designs she created, the idea of painstakingly delicate constellations etched onto each nail felt like the perfect way to approach the planetary phenomenon.

With 15 million views on TikTok, fans of zodiac nails are looking to star signs for their personal manicure inspo. Nail beds are being emblazoned with actual astrology charts, while others are opting for star sign nails inspired by the personality traits of their horoscope.

It’s hardly surprising given ‘millenial mysticism’ has been on the rise since the pandemic, with more of us than ever before looking for answers beyond the physical world. Zodiac nails also neatly tap into ‘celestialcore’, an aesthetic that blew up on the New York A/W23 catwalks and is all about bringing the night sky down to earth with motifs of constellations, stars and milky ways.

While Megan’s manicure with its black base is a very literal interpretation, most zodiac nails lean towards the nude end of the polish spectrum and feature delicate gold embellishments. All of which makes them wearable, while still adding interest with their update on an otherwise classic style.
