We have been waiting for bated breath for news on whether we would get a third season of Big Little Lies.
I mean, after launching in 2017, the HBO show proved itself to be a mammoth hit as it focused on the dramatic, scandalous and mysterious lives of the Monterey Five – Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Renata (Laura Dern), Jane (Shailene Woodley) and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz). The show (and its soundtrack) was so good that despite being intended as a standalone series, and even winning a coveted Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series (whoops), it returned for a second season in 2019.
And finally, three years later, we have finally got our answers about the third season. But, unfortunately, it’s not good news, folks… In a new interview with GQ, actress Zoë said the series is officially done. And to be honest, she gives good enough reason, as the show’s director Jean-Marc Vallée passed away in 2019.
“We talked about doing a season three a lot and, unfortunately, Jean-Marc Vallée, our incredible director, passed away this last year, which is heartbreaking, and I just can’t imagine going on without him,” she told the publication. “He really was the visionary for that show. So, unfortunately, it’s done.”
The rumour mill about Big Little Lies had been spinning for quite some time now, with Nicole Kidman admitting last year she would like to see it happen.
Appearing on the Radio Andy show, the Australian actress was asked, “If you could revisit something that you’ve done, make a sequel of something or revisit a character that you’ve already played, is there one that you think … there’s more story to be told?” Nicole answered: “I think we’d all love to do a Big Little Lies season 3, you know?” She went on to clarify that she had no idea whether there would be a third series or not.
Created and written by David E.Kelley, the first season of Big Little Lies received sixteen Emmy nominations, and won eight of them. Nicole, Alexander Skarsgård, and Laura Dern won awards for the show’s acting – with the whole BLL team dominating at the SAGS and Golden Globes.
We truly respect that the show would not have received the critical acclaim without its director Jean-Marc Vallée, and we agree with Zoë, that a third season without him would just not feel right.
