The build-and-price tool for this year’s Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize twins is now live on their brands’ respective websites, giving a glimpse into how The General plans to market its Ranger- and Tacoma-fighters. Reminder — the GM duo is now only available as a crew-cab short-box pickup.

Spoiler alert: file this one under “S” for “‘spensive.”

We’ll start with the Chevy, whose engine can be had in three different states of tune, plus a choice of two- or four-wheel-drive on the base model Work Truck. Out of the gate is a 2WD WT with the 237-horsepower tune for $37,197. Opting for the beefier 310-horse configuration is just a $1,520 walk. This delta seems to remain constant at all trims where it is available, leading us to believe customers would be silly not to select the brawnier tune.

For comparison, last year’s comparable base Colorado was $33,842 when equipped with the weedy 200-hp four-banger; or $35,192 if packing the V6 with just over 300 ponies. However, the new Colorado WT is vastly better equipped, since all trims get the good 11.3-inch infotainment screen, 8-inch digital gauge cluster, an array of active driving helpers, keyless go, wireless CarPlay, and a yaffle of USB ports to name just a few. Four-wheel-drive is an extra 3,900 clams, which is about right for the segment. Beyond the WT, powertrains are 4WD only.

The mid-range LT adds a few interior comforts and ditches the black plastic fascias for $45,477 when equipped with the engine you want; or $43,997 with the one you don’t. At these prices, anyone with half a brain will walk to the Trail Boss for just an extra $1,000 and enjoy a locking rear diff, better four-wheel-drive system, two-inch lift, and new colour options including a tasty Nitro Yellow. Packages abound, including ones for extra skid plates and trailering gear. One major oddity: it seems cruise control (the regular stuff, not adaptive) is not standard but part of a $625 group. Guys, c’mon — it’s 2023.

Big off-road guns arrive in the $49,997 Z71 and $59,897 ZR2. We’ve expounded on their features at length and will link those stories to spare you repetition. Interestingly, the optional high-output engine tune of 310hp and 430tq has not yet been given a price. Good news — the much-touted underbody cameras are not limited to the pricey ZR2, and are available on the Z71 in conjunction with the selection of about $5,000 worth of packages. And that nifty StowFlex tailgate? Part of a $1,980 Tech Pak, if you’re wondering. A check-all-the-boxes ZR2 will easily crest 70 grand, especially with the Desert Boss group, which also has not yet been priced.

On the GMC side of things, powertrain options are a lot more straightforward — and expensive. Every 2023 Colorado will be powered by the best (310/430) engine tune and have four-wheel-drive. Elevation trims start at $48,497, compared to a similar V6-equipped 2022 at $44,842. The new model year has a dandy interior and far more tech than last year’s truck, but consumers will have to decide for themselves if it’s to the tune of an extra four large.

The AT4, which used to be the range-topping 4×4, now charges $53,197 admission, compared to $46,142 last annum for a cloth-upholstered AT4. Many of its additions over the Elevation are practical, such as the locking differential and Autotrac two-speed transfer case. Again, the trick underbody cameras are not reserved for the most expensive model, available on AT4 for about $3,000 worth of packaged options. We predict this will be the volume trim.

Everyone recognizes the Denali name, showing up here for $62,497 with its chrome grille and snappy ‘diamond cut’ aluminum wheels. This is a $9,155 jump from the ’22 V6. There are few options, save for gear like trailering equipment and Kicker audio. Atop the heap is the much-touted AT4X with its gonzo suspension and ground clearance, bearing a price tag of $67,797. Notable add-ons are an ‘accessory power distribution box’ for 640 bones to make adding extra lights easier; sunroof for $1,150; and frippery like a sports bar with LED lights for $3,645. Checking every box can push the asking price to the high $70,000 bracket, meaning the tag on a loaded AT4X could start with an ‘8’ after taxes.
