The 49ers swapped players on their 53-man roster on Wednesday afternoon, waiving a recent draft pick in order to add to the offensive line.
Running back Trey Sermon, San Francisco’s 2021 third-round pick out of Ohio State, was waived to make room for Blake Hance, a guard claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.
Sermon, entering his second year at age 23, had an underwhelming preseason following an injury-plagued rookie year. The 49ers running back depth includes workhorse Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson Jr., rookie Ty Davis-Price and undrafted rookie Jordan Mason along with fullback Kyle Juszczyk.
Hance, 25, adds depth to a relatively young and inexperienced offensive line behind veterans Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey. He played 17 games and played in 58% of offensive snaps with the Browns last season after bouncing between practice squads in prior seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets.
The 49ers also placed DB Jimmie Ward (hamstring) and LB Curtis Robinson (groin) on the injured reserve list. Replacing them on the roster are TE Tyler Kroft and DL Jordan Willis, who signed one-year deals.
