Ally McCoist and Eniola Aluko have differing opinions over Arsenal’s imminent signing of Kai Havertz from Chelsea.
The Gunners are on the verge of unveiling Germany international Havertz as an Arsenal player after agreeing a deal with Chelsea worth £65m.
Havertz has endured a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge, scoring the winner in the 2021 Champions League final but largely frustrating Chelsea fans since his £72m move from Bayer Leverkusen three years ago.
Despite this, Mikel Arteta reckons he can get more out of Havertz and believes the 24-year-old will be a valuable and versatile member of his squad next season, capable of playing across the front three or even in midfield.
Scotland legend McCoist and ex-England forward Aluko were asked about Arsenal’s move for Havertz on talkSPORT and it quickly became apparent that they were in a disagreement.
‘Signing Kai Havertz, for me, I don’t really get it,’ Aluko said. ‘Arsenal need to sign players that are going to make them win the Premier League.’
McCoist jumped to the defence of the German, responding: ‘Havertz is one of them, I think he’s a great player.’
Aluko, who scored 47 goals across two spells at Chelsea, then said: ‘Havertz scored seven goals last season.’
McCoist reiterated his belief that Havertz will be of use to Arsenal, however, adding: ‘He’s not a centre forward, I don’t care what anyone says he’s not a centre forward, never has been, never will be.
‘He keeps coming towards the ball. I think in a forward area, and from a wide area they’ve already got Saka and Martinelli – different class.
‘But Havertz can play as a No. 10 or in midfield. I actually think he will be a great signing.’
McCoist and Aluko were at least in agreement that Havertz will not be a prolific goalscorer for Arsenal, with the former England star saying: ‘He’s not a 20-25 goal a season player is he? He’s not going to be [Erling] Haaland and that’s what Arsenal need.’
Havertz struggled in a Chelsea team that finished just 12th in the Premier League last season, but is set to join an Arsenal side that spent 248 days sitting top before finishing five points behind Manchester City.
