The video shows PM Modi washing sanitation workers’ feet in Prayagraj in order to honour them in 2019.

Easter known as great example of pain and sacrifice,was recently celebrated by believers all across the world. In connection with it, the fifth day of Holy Week, known as Maundy Thursday, was observed on April 6 to commemorate Jesus washing his disciples’ feet and eating the last supper with them before his crucifixion. In this context, it has come to our attention that some photographs and videos are circulating on social media purporting to show the Prime Minister performing a feet washing ceremony for workers on the occasion of Maundy Thursday. 

In the video Modi can be seen washing the feet of the workers and honoring them. In the background, you can listen to the speech delivered by Prime Minister on Jesus Christ in Hindi describing his greatness. Users who shared the video claims Prime Minister Narendra Modi observed Passover Thursday and he washed the feet of workers. However, when we investigated, we found that the claim was misleading.

A Google reverse image search using the key frames of the video led us to a tweet on PM Modi’s official handle with a caption “Moments I’ll cherish for my entire life! Honouring remarkable Safai Karamcharis, who have taken the lead when it comes to realising the dream of a Swachh Bharat! I salute each and every person making a contribution towards a Swachh Bharat”. It was uploaded on 24 February 2019.

In further search we were able to find many images and videos similar to the viral video in media reports published in 2019. According to the Outlook report “ During his visit to Prayagraj to attend the Kumbh Mela, Prime Minister Narendra Modi washed the feet of sanitation workers, whose efforts were acknowledged at the occasion of “Swachh Kumbh Swachh Aabhaar” award.The sanitation workers were shocked and overjoyed at the Prime Minister’s humility”.

As per reports, the prime minister washed the feet of around five workers. At the Swachh Kumbh Swachh Aabhaar program organized by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in Uttar Pradesh.  Modi washed the feet of sanitation workers in honor of them. Times of India , NDTV , Hindustan Times and many other national media reported this news. 

According to Indian Express, the prime minister is seen washing the feet of sanitation workers in Prayagraj. During his visit to the Kumbh Mela on 24 February 2019, the Prime Minister appreciated the sanitation workers who keep the city clean. 

Moreover, there is no report of Modi washing the feet of Christians on the occasion of Maundy Thursday. In 2019, Modi honored the sanitation workers in Allahabad. Pictures and videos from this occasion are now circulating in connection with Easter.  

Conclusion – Fact Crescendo found that images and videos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi honouring sanitation workers by washing their feet in Allahabad in 2019 are being shared with the claim that PM Modi performed feet washing ceremony in connection with Easter on Maundy Thursday. Thus the video is Misleading.
