Arsenal may miss out on a January move for Weston McKennie with Premier League rivals Leeds United stepping up talks, according to reports.

The Gunners recently made an enquiry about signing United States international McKennie from Italian side Juventus.

Mikel Arteta is keen to recruit a new central midfielder before the end of the January window – and according to Gazzetta dello Sport – the Premier League leaders made a move for 24-year-old.

It’s claimed that Serie A club Juventus are open to selling McKennie this month and would accept a fee in the region of €25m (£22m) plus bonuses.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Tuesday that Leeds and Juventus are engaged in ongoing talks over a move for McKennie and there have also been discussions with the player over personal terms.

Leeds are part-owned by Americans, have an American head coach in Jesse Marsch and there are two United States internationals already in their squad – Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams – which may help convince McKennie over a move to Elland Road.

Leeds, however, are also said to be interested in Azzedine Ounahi from Angers – meaning a move to Arsenal is not totally out of the question for McKennie.

McKennie started his career in the United States but ended up making his professional debut for German club Schalke after he joined their youth academy.

He made a total of 91 appearances for Schalke, registering five goals and seven assists, before earning a loan to Juventus for the 2020-21 season.

Juventus decided to make him a permanent signing as he joined in a deal worth €18.5m (£16.3m) with a further €7m (£6m) in add-ons.

McKennie has featured 96 times for Juventus in total so far, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists. He has 41 caps for his county and featured at the World Cup in Qatar.
