Arsenal reportedly make Dusan Vlahovic ‘breakthrough’ after Fiorentina decision

Mikel Arteta has turned around the fortunes of Arsenal since their dismal start to the season which saw them bottom of the table in the campaign’s early embers.

They could go into fourth should West Ham lose to Leeds and they beat Tottenham in Sunday’s scheduled North London Derby with Tottenham on Sunday.

The Gunners submitted a request to postpone this weekend’s game due to high Covid rates within the camp, with a decision yet to be made.

Should the match be called off, Arteta will have more time on his hands to look at recruitment as his side vie for a top four finish.

The club have been heavily linked with Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic, and reportedly recently submitted an offer of £58million for the striker, who has 19 goals in 23 games this term.

The 21-year-old has rejected a number of extension offers from his current employers over the last 18 months and now Italian newspaper La Repubblica (via Metro) says that club president Rocco Commisso is ready to let him leave for the Gunners in a ‘breakthrough’ moment.

Once Arsenal and Fiorentina have discussed possible payment terms, it is likely that the Serie A club will accept the tabled offer.

The Italian outfit is hoping to negotiate the Gunners into paying most of the fee up-front ahead of Vlahovic penning a five-and-a-half-year deal at the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are continuing to scout in Italy to further bolster their squad, and the Telegraph. state that talks are “advanced” to secure a six-month loan deal for Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo.

football.london understands that they are keen to get a deal done soon.

The ex-Barcelona man has featured on just four occasions for the Old Lady this season having signed from Camp Nou for £66million in 2020.

Many Arsenal fans have been calling for more investment in the centre of the park, with this demand only increasing after Granit Xhaka’s red card against Liverpool in Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg goalless draw.

Meanwhile, the Guardian has reported that Arteta stepped in to block a transfer for now-Tottenham defender Emerson Royal in the summer.

Talks were reportedly at an advanced stage before the Gunners boss stepped in to put a halt to proceedings over concerns that he would not be able to adapt to his style of play.

In the end, Arteta brought in Takehiro Tomiyasu on deadline day, just hours after talks between he and Spurs had broken down.
