Arsenal’s expected XI vs West Ham as Arteta faces tough Saliba call

Arsenal will host West Ham at the Emirates Stadium on Boxing Day as they look to continue their stellar start to the Premier League season. Manager Mikel Arteta has welcomed star centre-back William Saliba back to training after the World Cup final but he faces a key decision on whether or not to include him, as Express Sport takes you through how the Gunners are likely to line up against the Hammers…

Goalkeeper: Ramsdale

Arteta hasn’t looked back since ditching Bernd Leno and handing Aaron Ramsdale the starting spot between the sticks. His dressing-room presence and impressive shot-stopping have made him a key member of the Arsenal XI, and the doesn’t look like changing in the near future.

Ramsdale went to the World Cup with England but he didn’t see the pitch with Jordan Pickford firmly ahead in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order, which should leave the Arsenal man fresh, motivated and ready to go against West Ham.

Midfield: Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka

Arsenal’s midfield has been a revelation this season with Thomas Partey spraying passes and screening the backline, Granit Xhaka excelling in a more adventurous role and Martin Odegaard stepping up to the plate since landing the captain’s armband at the age of just 23.

With all three fit and healthy it is pretty much a no-brainer for Arteta to throw them straight in against the Hammers, who will be desperate to bank points, catapult up the Premier League table and ease the pressure on manager David Moyes.

Attack: Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli

Right-winger Bukayo Saka was selected by many respected outlets to be in the World Cup Team of the Tournament after his superb three-goal showing with England. Gabriel Martinelli played a more peripheral role with Brazil, who crashed out in the quarter-finals against Croatia, but he is still a key man in north London.

Arsenal’s two dangermen out wide are set to flank Eddie Nketiah through the middle, who is primed for a crucial few weeks in his young career with starting striker Gabriel Jesus sidelined after undergoing knee surgery.
