Babar Azam’s Pakistan playing in Sri Lanka without central contract, PCB faces revolt amid demand for pay hike

Reports have suggested that the Pakistan players have expressed their desire to meet Zaka Ashraf, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee, and put down their demands. A 50 percent pay hike is among one of their many demands.

Notably, a player of Babar Azam’s stature isn’t among the top ten highest-earning cricketers globally. The players want PCB to develop a structure which guarantees their long-term financial stability.

The players are also keen on securing medical and educational benefits for their families. Disclosure of sponsors, share from revenues of ICC events and changes in clauses over their participation in foreign leagues – are also something the players want to take up with Ashraf.

Multiple sources have revealed that the PCB in recent times has demanded USD 25,000 from each player as a participation fee in foreign leagues like Major League Cricket and Global T20 Canada. Fairness of the ‘participiation fee’ is in question.

Pakistan are well on course for a 2-0 series win in Sri Lanka. They won the first Test in Galle by four wickets and have put themselves in a strong position in the ongoing second Test in Galle. A discussion between the board and the players might take place once they are back in the country.

PCB would be hoping to address the concerns of the players before their crucial Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup 2023 campaigns.
